Licensed Practical Nursing

Diploma Program

Graduates of this program can apply to the Florida Board of Nursing to take the NCLEX examination to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). LPNs provide primary nursing care. They work under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. The employment of licensed practical nurses is projected to grow 12 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations.

As the baby-boom population ages, the overall need for healthcare services is expected to increase. LPNs will be needed in residential care facilities and in-home health environments to care for older patients. Licensed practical nurses work in many settings, including nursing homes and extended care facilities, hospitals, physicians’ offices, and private homes, working full or part-time.

Program Description

The Practical Nursing Program prepares graduates to practice within the scope of the Practical Nurse under the direction of a qualified health professional within structured, acute, intermediate, long-term, and ambulatory health care facilities. The practical nurse is a valuable member of the health care team who is active in promoting health, preventing disease, and caring for the sick. The Practical Nursing Program is 12 months and completed over three 16-week semesters. Each course is offered a minimum of twice per semester.

Practical Nursing: Additional Programming Information

Clinical courses include clinical simulation experiences, as well as actual onsite experiences. Students taking classes online will attend laboratory sessions on campus and online. Clinical policies for standards of conduct shall be enforced in lab sessions and clinical sessions. Students attending at a distance who do not manage their distance education experience appropriately and timely will be asked to return to campus or withdraw from their studies. Please see standards of satisfactory progress for minimum grades acceptable for academic progression.

What do LPNs do?

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) provide primary medical care. They work under the direction of registered nurses and doctors.

Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses typically do the following:

  • Monitor patients’ health—for example, by checking their blood pressure
  • Administer primary patient care, including changing bandages and inserting catheters
  • Provide for the essential comfort of patients, such as helping them bathe or dress
  • Discuss the care they are providing to patients and listen to their concerns
  • Report patients’ status and regards to registered nurses and doctors
  • Keep records on patients’ health
